When you want to purchase a diamond ring, it means you need to know the basic knowledge about diamonds. It has been known that the quality and the price of a diamond are determined by 4C’s (Cut, Clarity, Colour, and Carat). If you have decided the cut, clarity and colour for your diamond ring, it will be easy for you to determine the carat size. 4 Karat Diamond Ring

The weight of a diamond is commonly measured in carats which is usually abbreviated ‘ct’ or ‘kt’. The term carat is originally from ancient times when the weight of any precious gemstones was measured with carob bean in which each bean is about one carat. Carat was standardized internationally and adapted to the metric system as the measurement of diamond’s weight in 1913. A carat equals 0.2 grams, which actually a little more than 0.007 ounce. That means it needs about 142 carats to equal with 1 ounce.

When it comes for smaller diamonds below one carat, the weight of them is expressed in points, with a point equals to 0.01 carat. For example, five points is for saying 5/100 of a carat and fifty points equals to a half carat and so on. Sometimes, instead of use carat weight we use carat size. It is because small round diamonds with the same weight will look similar in size and diameters, but when a diamond increase in weight, the size will become more unpredictable. Diamonds with a shallow cut may have a greater diameter than ones with a deeper cut, even though both of them have the same weight. However, of course you will avoid diamond with a shallow cut since it does not reflect the light properly and will have less brilliance than the one with a deeper cut. 4 Karat Diamond Ring

The weight of diamond will have a great impact on its price. Other factors such as clarity, colour and cut will be equal; however, the heavier a diamond is, the greater the price will be. Generally, a diamond will lose about 40% to 60% of its rough weight when it is cut. Over a million rough diamonds being mined, only 1 which can be cut into a 1 carat finished diamond. Generally, a 4 carat round brilliant diamond will be about 10.4 mm in diameter; while a 4 carat princess diamond or square diamond will be about 12.7 mm in diameter. 4 Karat Diamond Ring

Another term which is usually found in jewellery trade and which usually people get confused with carat is karat. These two terms are often confused as the same terms, but actually those two are different terms. Karat refers to the fineness of gold alloys (for example, pure gold is 24 karat, so that 14 karat refers to 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals). 4 karat diamond ring means a diamond ring with 4 parts gold and 20 parts other metals. The most common karat people choose either for their white gold or yellow gold is 14 karat and 18 karat, while it is very rare to have 24 karat
